In the pharmaceutical industry, povidone is used widely and deeply. The povidone-iodine disinfectant formed by combining povidone with iodine overcomes the drawbacks of iodine, such as low solubility and instability, and features low toxicity, high efficacy, and sustained release. It is extensively applied in surgical procedures, the prevention of postoperative infections, and the treatment of conditions like ulcers and stomatitis. In addition, povidone is an important pharmaceutical excipient and can be widely employed as a binder, solubilizer, dispersion stabilizer, coating agent, and sustained-release agent. Povidone with different K-values has distinct applications in pharmaceutical preparations. For example, povidone K30 used as a binder can produce free-flowing granules and yield tablets with strong dissolution capacity and good hardness. For low-density raw materials, povidone K90, which has stronger binding ability, can be chosen, with a typical dosage of less than 2%. For effervescent tablets, copovidone is recommended as the binder, generally at a dosage of 2% to 5%.
